En 1872, ayudó a ganar una famosa apuesta al ex gobernador de California Leland Stanford al fotografiar el galope de un caballo. Muybridge inventó un complejo sistema eléctrico para liberar el obturador que capturaba una serie de imágenes congeladas, demostrando de manera concluyente, por primera vez, que un caballo al galope no apoya ningún casco en el suelo durante una fracción de segundo. En las tres décadas siguientes, Muybridge no cejó en su empeño de catalogar muchos aspectos del movimiento humano y animal, fotografiando cientos de caballos y otros animales, así como a modelos desnudos o cubiertos, inmersos en actividades como correr, caminar, boxear, practicar esgrima y descender por escaleras (este último estudio inspiró la famosa pintura de Marcel Duchamp de 1912).Este libro recorre la vida y la obra de Muybridge, desde sus primeras ideas sobre anatomía y movimiento hasta sus últimos experimentos fotográficos. En él se reproducen numerosas láminas del rompedor Animal Locomotion (1887) de Muybridge. Además se recoge buena parte de su primer álbum ilustrado, The Attitudes of Animals in Motion (1881), elaborado a mano y sumamente inusual. Una detallada cronología del investigador británico Stephen Herbert arroja nueva luz sobre uno de los pioneros más importantes de la fotografía. Biografía del autor Hans Christian Adam estudió Psicología, Historia del Arte y Comunicación en Gotinga y Viena. Se ha especializado en fotografía histórica y ha publicado numerosos artículos y libros, incluidos títulos sobre viajes y fotografía de guerra.
